Transport problems in North-West London

Everyone in the outer boroughs of north London knows that it is impossible to easily travel in an east-west direction, without using a car. This is even though we have many north-south rail and underground lines. Even the Conservatives agree with this!

I have been campaigning for several years to introduce some sort of light-rail system, based around the big north London regeneration areas, that will be developed over the next twenty years. The aim is to offer better transport than the private car, and buses which are caught up in traffic congestion.

It is impossible to easily travel from north to north-west London, for instance, without going into central London. This is time consuming, and often not practical on a daily basis. We all suffer from the fact that people cannot reach job opportunities they might otherwise have.

That is the transport problem – what is the solution? There is no road space for extra limited-stop buses (which was all that Boris Johnson could suggest in his last manifesto) so light-rail needs to be considered. Although railways are expensive, there are various underused freight lines, and old railway routes that are available, and might be used. This means that a “DLR” solution is possible in north London.

This map is an example of where a light-rail system could be built, based around the big new Brent Cross Cricklewood development. This could also be extended eastwards, using the wide North Circular Road corridor, with more stations where it crossed other lines.
